Integrative Studies is a degree for the future and a rigorous academic pursuit. It requires personal engagement to make connections between existing knowledge and future goals.
-
Students learn to integrate theories, methods, insights and practices from various disciplines into a focused body of knowledge.
-
There are two required courses for the MAIS degree with the remaining course work to be developed and tailored to your own interests and goals.
-
While your individualized path must span at least two disciplines, you have more than 20 graduate programs from which to choose courses.
-
Students engage in intense intellectual engagement both in and outside the classroom.
The Graduate Program is ideal for adults seeking personal and intellectual growth and professional development. A significant number of Integrative Studies graduates enter the program looking for ways to enrich their quest for knowledge, and in the process, they find useful ways to serve the greater good by starting their own businesses, publishing their research and teaching. Other graduates capitalize on their experience to advance their careers as social service providers, government employees, social justice activists and faith-based organization members.
Our Mission
Integrative Learning
Integrative learning is an integral component of lifelong intellectual growth. It defines NKU's Integrative Studies graduate program. Using an interdisciplinary approach, graduates explore diverse subjects and apply innovative perspectives from a variety of disciplines. This process extends candidates' intellectual resources and range, promotes openness to new ideas and appreciation of differences, and stimulates a lifelong commitment to learning and free inquiry. The structure of the program is flexible enough to meet personal and professional goals.
Value
As a multi-disciplinary program with individualized curricula, we aspire to be integrative, developing new common ground, including shared vocabulary, concepts, problem-solving methods and techniques, between traditionally separate disciplines. We also see great scholarly value in the generalist perspective, recognizing existing common ground and work with multiple disciplines to answer questions, solve problems and advance understanding.
